The University of South Carolina (often referred to as UofSC) is a public research university situated in Columbia, South Carolina. Brief History
Founded in 1801 as South Carolina College, the university aimed to foster harmony between different regions of the state. The first building, Rutledge College, was completed in 1805, and the initial group of students was enrolled that same year.
In the 19th century, the university experienced numerous changes. It temporarily closed during the Civil War but resumed operations in 1866 as the first Southern university to admit African American students during the Reconstruction era. In 1906, it rechartered as a university, which marked an expansion of its curriculum and higher education goals.
