Do all the states of India follow the same time?

India's timekeeping is unlike that of many other countries. The nation operates on a specific standard time, but there are variations within its borders.

All states in India officially follow Indian Standard Time (IST), which is UTC+5:30. This means that when it is noon in Mumbai, it is also noon in cities like Delhi and Kolkata.

Some regions may informally observe different times. For example, Assam and West Bengal often operate on IST, but there can be local practices that differ slightly.

In Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Dharamshala, some locals may adjust their clocks by 10 minutes ahead of IST, leading to an unofficial IST+1:10. This local variation showcases the uniqueness of the area.

Despite the official standard, travelers should be aware that regional practices and local preferences can influence timekeeping. Be prepared to adjust your watches when moving from one state to another.

India is a vast country with diverse cultures, and its approach to time reflects this richness. Each area contributes to a unique experience that goes beyond mere timekeeping.
