The human body is made up of about 60% water. It's needed for every single function and process, including carrying nutrients to cells, flushing out toxins, and keeping your tissues moist. Not drinking enough water can lead to dehydration, which can cause tiredness, headaches, and a drop in productivity—not something you want in a busy office environment.

The commonly cited '8x8 rule'—drinking eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day (which equates to about 2 liters, or half a gallon)—is easy to remember, but it isn't backed by hard scientific evidence. The truth is, the amount of water each person needs can vary widely depending on several factors like your size, how active you are, and the climate you live in.

For office workers, who generally have low physical activity levels during their jobs, the average recommendation is to drink at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day. But that's a starting point. If you're sweating in a hot office, or you're a big coffee drinker (caffeine can dehydrate you), then you might need more.

A good rule of thumb is to check the color of your urine. Pale, straw-colored urine usually means you're well-hydrated, whereas a dark yellow or amber color might indicate dehydration. It's not the most glamorous of measures, but it's a handy and immediate way to check up on your hydration status.

Too, that about 20% of our daily water intake usually comes from food, especially fruits and vegetables. Snacking on water-rich foods like cucumber, oranges, or watermelon can help boost hydration.

But why is staying hydrated so important for office workers? First and foremost, dehydration can significantly hamper your cognitive function. It impairs your attention, memory, and motor skills. That means even mild dehydration could have you making more mistakes and working at a slower pace.

Moreover, staying well-hydrated also supports good mood and energy levels. Research has shown that dehydration can make you more prone to stress — and if there's something the office life doesn't need more of, it's stress!

It can be hard to remember to drink water when you're focused on your work. Here are a few creative tips to help you stay on top of your hydration game:

  • Set reminders on your phone or computer. Apps or calendar notifications can prompt you to take a sip.
  • Keep a water bottle in sight. Post-it notes with hydration reminders can be helpful too.
  • Start and end your day with a glass of water. Make it a part of your daily routine.
  • Drink herbal teas. It's a great way to stay warm in an air-conditioned office and still get your fluids.

While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, aiming for 1.5 to 2 liters of water per day if you're an office worker is a good rule of thumb. That amount can change based on personal circumstances, but staying hydrated is a simple yet effective way to keep your body and your brain ticking over nicely.

So next time you reach for another cup of coffee at your desk, consider whether a glass of water might be a better choice for your body at that moment.
