Brief History
California State University Long Beach was founded in 1949. It started as Los Angeles-Orange County State College with just 169 students, using a converted apartment building for classes. In 1950, it was renamed Long Beach State College to better reflect its location and community commitment.

The university assumed its current name, California State University Long Beach, when the California State University system was established in 1972.
