A Brief History

Western Carolina University began as Cullowhee Academy in 1889. It became known as Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School in 1893 to address the need for trained teachers. The institution was designated as a state-supported teacher’s college in 1925 and was renamed Western Carolina Teachers College.

In 1953, the name changed to Western Carolina College reflecting its expanding academic offerings. WCU achieved university status in 1967 and is now a part of the University of North Carolina system.
