Gallaudet University: A Beacon of Learning and Opportunity for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Gallaudet University is the premier institution for the deaf and hard of hearing. Located in Washington, D.C., it provides a dynamic and inclusive community where students receive the tools to thrive both academically and professionally.

A Brief History

Gallaudet's journey began with Alice Cogswell, a young deaf girl in the early 19th century. Her father, Dr. Mason Cogswell, recognized the need for specialized education and shared this vision with Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. In 1817, they established the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut.

Edward Miner Gallaudet, Thomas Gallaudet's son, further advanced this mission. With the support of Amos Kendall and an act of Congress, Gallaudet College was founded in 1864. This became the first school dedicated to the advanced education of the deaf and hard of hearing globally.

Academics

Gallaudet University offers a wide range of programs and degrees focused on academic and professional training. Students can pursue Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees across various disciplines.

Undergraduate programs emphasize hands-on and collaborative learning. Graduate programs focus on research and application, preparing students to lead in their fields.

The curriculum is delivered in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English, ensuring students can learn in their preferred way. Gallaudet is committed to accessibility and accommodations for academic success.

Gallaudet may not appear in traditional college rankings due to its specialized mission, but it is recognized for its impact in deaf education and bilingual teaching. The university is respected for its contributions to deaf culture, linguistics, and accessibility technologies.
